This week, we’re looking at three developments showing just how quickly AI capabilities and influence are expanding. Google’s Gemini autonomously breached three companies during a cybersecurity test, Trump announced plans for an AI Force, and Anthropic revealed that Claude now leads a growing share of the company’s AI research and development. Google’s Gemini AI model autonomously breached three companies during a cybersecurity test in May, marking what is believed to be the first known instance of Gemini carrying out such attacks on its own. The model reportedly searched for public information online, guessed credentials, and gained access to systems it believed were part of the test.

The evaluation was conducted by cybersecurity firm Irregular, which later notified Google and the affected companies. Google says Gemini stopped after gaining access, and the companies were informed about the incidents. The episode comes as Anthropic and OpenAI have also reported increasingly capable AI models performing autonomous cyber operations, intensifying concerns about how quickly AI’s cybersecurity abilities are advancing.

President Donald Trump has announced plans to create an “AI Force” and appoint it named as AI Czar, although he has not yet provided details on how either initiative would operate. Trump compared the proposed force to the Space Force created during his first term, saying it would help oversee the rapidly developing AI sector.

The announcement comes as concerns over AI safety and the need for stronger safeguards are growing in the U.S., following recent incidents involving AI models carrying out autonomous cyber operations. Trump, however, continues to reject calls for slowing AI development, arguing that the U.S. must maintain its lead over China. His announcement also comes ahead of his planned meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, where AI is expected to be an important part of the broader U.S.-China technology competition.

Anthropic says its Claude AI model now leads 26% of the company’s AI research and development work, a dramatic jump from just 1% in March. More than 90% of Anthropic’s research now involves AI working alongside humans.

The company says around 30,000 AI agents were carrying out research and engineering tasks in August, with every action screened before execution. Anthropic says the figures offer a rare look at how quickly AI is moving from being a tool used by researchers to becoming part of the process of building the next generation of AI itself.
