In today’s edition, we’re looking at three major moves shaping the global AI race: America’s push for open AI models, HCLTech’s ₹14,257 crore investment to build major AI infrastructure in India, and Anthropic’s launch of Claude Opus 5, built to deliver stronger performance at a lower cost. America’s AI leadership may depend on making advanced AI available beyond a handful of big tech companies. Open - weight AI models could lower costs, increase competition, spread innovation, and strengthen America’s security. Open-source software helped build much of today’s internet by allowing people to freely use, modify, and improve it. Supporters believe America should take a similar approach with AI. Open AI models can be downloaded and customized, giving startups, businesses, universities, and government agencies access to powerful AI without building expensive models from scratch or relying on one company.

Open models do carry risks because they can be modified after release, but supporters argue they can also help security teams find weaknesses and defend against AI-powered cyber threats.

AI Infrastructure

HCLTech is making a major ₹14,257 crore bet on India’s AI future with its first AI data centre in Odisha. The company is partnering with Sarvam and the Odisha government, while also planning a new tech centre that could create 5,000 jobs. HCLTech will invest ₹14,257 crore to build an AI data centre at the upcoming Odisha Sovereign AI Park. The project will combine HCLTech’s technology infrastructure with Indian AI startup Sarvam’s models to build AI solutions for businesses, government departments, and public organisations.

The investment is aimed at strengthening India’s ability to develop and run AI using infrastructure and technology within the country. Separately, HCLTech will set up a global technology centre in Bhubaneswar to provide AI-powered digital services to companies worldwide. The centre is expected to employ around 5,000 people and could begin operations by 2028.

Anthropic’s new Claude Opus 5 promises stronger performance at a much lower price, as the AI industry shifts from simply building powerful models to making them affordable enough for everyday business use. Claude Opus 5 performs better than Anthropic’s previous Claude Fable 5 in areas such as coding and professional tasks, while costing half as much. It is priced at $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens. Anthropic says the model is designed for everyday use, responding to businesses that increasingly want strong AI performance without paying extremely high costs.

The launch comes as Anthropic competes with OpenAI, Microsoft, Amazon, Google and lower-cost Chinese AI companies.

NotebookLM is Google’s AI research tool that helps you understand, organize, and work with information from your sources. When connected with tools like Claude Code, it can be used to automate more of the workflow from researching a topic and structuring the information to creating a complete presentation. Instead of researching, organizing content, and building slides separately, you can automate much of the process in one workflow, saving hours of manual work.

AniStudio is an AI animation tool that turns simple text prompts into complete animated scenes. You can describe what you want, and it creates the characters, backgrounds, movements, and expressions for you.

You can also change camera angles, expressions, and movements without rebuilding the entire scene. It makes creating and editing animations much faster, even if you don’t have traditional animation skills.

This week, we found a few interesting things for you to check out:

  • AI Meets Forest Conservation. Indian Forest Service officer Pushpendra Rana is using AI, machine learning, and data analysis to understand how people and forests affect each other. His work aims to improve environmental policies and strengthen forest management in India.

  • Meta AI Can Now Handle Tasks on Its Own. Meta is upgrading Meta AI to understand your context and complete tasks with less prompting, including daily calendar briefings, weekly meal plans, and regular trend updates. The features are launching in select markets first, with plans to expand to more platforms, including WhatsApp.

  • Google Adds Selfie Videos for Account Recovery. Google is introducing selfie video as a new way to verify your identity and regain access to a locked account. Users record a short video during setup, and if they’re locked out later, Google can compare a new selfie video with the original to confirm their identity.
